T_Sims8 With the Old Breed by E.B Sledge is the story of Sledge's experiences during WW2. It opens with him being trained to become a marine at places like Pavuvu and Guadalcanal. He is deployed to Peleliu where he experiences the horror of battle. They discover that the Japanese have entrenched themselves and they must hunt them out one nest at a time. Then, the Marines returned to Pavuvu for a brief "relaxation" period before departing for Okinawa. While there it begins to rain and they are nearly buried in thick, glue-like mud. The book really shows the true side of the War in the Pacific and brings out the patriotic side of the reader.

This novel is a easy read for most high school level student. It didn't take me long to read it, only about 2 weeks. It is extremely graphic and uses exemplary detail in describing the aspects of battle. I liked how it showed the effects the war had on the psyche of the men who bravely fought this war. While reading this novel I felt extremely proud to be an American, knowing that when necessary we have people willing to go through hell on earth to protect us. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes war novels but not to anyone who has a weak stomach. It is a fairly quick read but you don't want to read it too fast and miss the true greatness of the novel.

Anonymous Short, sweet and to the point. 'With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa' is the very best personal memoir on World War II that I have ever read. Sledge's book very thoroughly describes and covers the physical, mental, and emotional horrors of battle. Sledges first-hand experience and understanding of youth lost during battle is truly frightening. He describes the gloomy environment, the ear pounding sounds, foul stench, bitter taste, and experience of men, or boys in combat. Sledge writes about their fears and trepidation, but also writes about the bravery and camaraderie, or brotherhood these men had towards one another. Soldiers that fought and some witnessed the death of their buddies. All readers need do is read a chapter, put their head back, close their eyes, and visualize what the American soldier went through to protect America. If there was a Pulitzer Prize for a personal memoir it would surely go to Eugene B. Sledge for his book. 'With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa' should be required reading in all American History classes throughout our great land.

Anonymous With the Old Breed might have been the best book Ive ever read. The book so greatly expresses the feelings of American soldiers in World War II at Peleiu and Okinawa. E.B sledge who this book follows actually wrote notes everyday at Peleiu and Okinawa. He turned those notes into this book. E.B Sledge serves with the marines in the Pacific fighting the Japanese. Read this book to see the merciless acts committed by the Japanese, and see the courage, honor, and willpower that got E.B Sledge through the war. Read about E.Bs friends who gave their lives so we could have a good life. This is by far the best non- fiction book I have ever read. I would recommend this book to all non fiction readers, but I think almost every reader would enjoy this book. Some of my likes are he tells his feelings so you can kind of feel how he felt at war, and he describes events that happened very well. Best of all he writes this book so it has not one confusing spot. My only dislike is that this book couldnt be longer.

Anonymous Sledge encompasses his experiences suffered in the Pacific Campaign in one thoroughly engrossing book. Perhaps no other author expresses in detail what life as a Marine in the Pacific in WWII was like like 'Sledgehammer.' Originally written for only for his family, Sledge is able to reach the attention of young and old men and women alike. For those people that have a passion to truly understand the mentality of war and the perspective of a common man deemed a hero, then Sledge's book will deliver and continue to deliver you with harsh reality. This book is a must read for all high school and college students. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a great read.

jimmygJG With the Old Breed displays the brutality, the boredoom the frustation of the men who fought in those battles. E B Sledge writes with a simplistic beauty to bring home the waste of war. His style makes simple yet elegant with the prose of a man not prone to overstating but truly captures the soul of the marine. Do your job and cover your follow marine.

Not overly analyzing about war E B Sledge takes you to the front battle and lays open the true effects of war.

Please read to know what war is and how romance is not in war its when you come home.

Anonymous I am a veteran of World War II having served as an infantry rifleman in the 328th Infantry Regiment in the European theatre. I am proud of my service in combat against the German Army but after reading this book, I am convinced that what I experienced was child's play compared to the suffering and horrors descibed by the author of this book. His descriptions of the filth and stench of battle are authentic but at the same time beyond belief. This is unquestionably the best anti-war book you could possibly read. Bravo to Sledgehammer and the Marines!

Pogeybait "With the Old Breed" is one of the best books that I have read about WWII. Mr. Sledge put you in the foxhole with him. He even takes time to describe the weapons being used. After reading this book, one has to wonder how a human could do what they did. Being a former Marine, I know about the Marine Corps training and I am sure that it had something to do with what happened on those islands.

Semper Fi,

Mr. Sledge, Bravo!

Anonymous If you love the USMC, then you'll love this book. It's a gripping and compelling memoir of a Marine and his life on Peleliu and Okinawa. As a fellow Marine, I definitely have a new respect after reading this non fiction for the pacific theater and the Marines that went through the war. Love this book, and highly recommend if you are a WWII buff or a Marine lover.

Anonymous The book gives you a personal insight of the Pacific war front from a soldier who lived a breathed all the experiences that impacted his life. The experience and emotion is passed on to the reader in a way that helps you better understand how difficult life was for these heros.
